Looking
good
Your concern with your appearance
Puberty is both a scary and an exciting time of
your life, but the key thing is that you’re not alone! Whatever you go through
over the next few years, you can be sure
that every other boy and girl is going through a similar set of experiences. And
as much as it may feel like it sometimes – you’re not so different from
anyone else. One thing does seem very personal though –
and that’s the way your body starts to change its shape. And not necessarily in the way
you want it to!

You
are what you eat
Your diet and your health
Yes, it really is true – you are what you eat! Everything you put into
your mouth affects the way your body works, looks and feels.
Everybody needs the same basic body-building ingredients in food – we call these nutrients – but your body changes at different
times of your life. And during puberty, your body is growing and changing so fast, that you have special
nutrient needs.

Getting
physical
Growth spurts, exercise and you
Remember when you were a little child and had all that energy to
run around? You could spend hours running about in the park and never seem to get tired? Have you noticed that, nowadays, you
don’t get nearly so much exercise? Have you turned into a bit of a couch potato?
Whatever your level of fitness, reading this book can help you to start exercising more, to improve
the exercise you’re doing already, and to make sure you’re not over-doing things.

Your
changing body
How puberty affects you
Your body has been continuously changing from the day you were
born. The most obvious changes took place as you developed from a newborn baby to an infant, but the next major
event is about to happen as you reach your teens – puberty. Puberty is that period of adolescence
when your mind and your body break through the childhood barrier into adulthood. Yes –
you are becoming an adult! This is an exciting period of life, and most young people can’t wait to
get going.

Thoughts
and feelings
Your new-found emotions
At this point in your life, you’re either
experiencing, or are about to experience, some major changes to your
body. You’ll gradually become aware of the physical stuff that’s happening, but there are changes happening in
your mind as well that can be harder to identify and understand.
Puberty can be a very stressful time. Sometimes you’ll feel as though you’re riding an emotional
rollercoaster. It’s not surprising. You’re starting to leave your childhood behind, and adapt to adulthood.
That’s a huge jump.
